The play shows how increasing wealth and so-called education make people selfish, distancing themselves from less educated and poorer relatives. In old age, the couple faces the same loneliness caused by such selfishness. Yet, they realize that true joy lies in the selfless love and sincerity of the simple, less privileged. Finally, they embrace the happiness of living with others, giving up selfish isolation and finding peace in togetherness.
