In an era when women had no right to oppose their husbands, Digambari—Rabindranath Tagore’s grandmother—dared to demand separation from her powerful husband Dwarkanath Tagore. Though she tolerated his drinking, meat-eating, and even immoral businesses, she rebelled when he fell for a foreign woman. Supported by her mother-in-law Alokananda, she urged him to leave home. Surprisingly, Dwarkanath accepted, handing over responsibilities before moving to London after her death.
